Plus I wanted people to come into my room without being uncomfortable if it were a filthy place because I know I sure would be. This related to the first point, ever since I went to university and it's friendly to keep your door open, I constantly clean my room because I don't want people to judge me for being messy. Unless you're drunk at 4am and are stumbling to take your clothes off before bed, then you're exempt. I am the Mayor of Lazytown sometimes but I can't warrant anyone not using a perfectly empty wash basket. Get a wash basket, if you already have one, USE IT. They may lay around for a few hours yes, but it's better than a few days. Limit yourself to one glass, fork, spoon, knife etc therefore you will HAVE to remove the dishes from your room in order to eat again just later in the day. In the extreme cases of cutlery and crockery hoarding (I'm guilty of this) if things get too much. Usually if you say, 'Okay I'll just pile all my dirty washing into the corner for now' and do just that you'll either realise that the room wasn't as messy as you thought it was (my room is only ever really messy due to the abundance of clothes) or you'll think 'I can't stop there!' and get stuck into it. Slightly exaggerated but it gets you into the habit of thinking that the way you're living is just not acceptable. Think to yourself 'If I saw someone else's room like this, I'd be pretty disgusted' or 'Imagine if someone saw the state I'm living in now, I'd doubt they'd want to know me'. Mind tricks and changing your mentality about cleanliness help.

They cannot be done all at once for the week. Those 5 minutes cannot be made up later by doing 10 minutes tomorrow. But every single day, just 5 little minutes. More than 15 and you're likely be destracted by something, and then you lose a lot of the 'yay I did it for today!' euphoria. Either you are going to clean for 5 minutes, which is actually a lot when it's just general tidying up, or you're going to say 'I'm gonna keep going' and clean more. If you do, then one of two things is going to happen. But once you stand up, you put on a clock and say 'I am going to do this for 5 minutes'. The hardest thing about those five minutes is actually standing up.

So what I do is, say I'm in the middle of redditing or watching a movie and need a break, I'll stand up and tell myself, '5 minutes'. It starts in one spot, grows legs, and suddenly my whole room is covered.

But for me, what I sometimes have a problem with is general clutter. If they are for you, then include them for yourself. This doesn't count dishes or vacuuming or anything like that, because I do those often and they're not really a problem for me. Good luck! I've been 'clean' a year! Like AA, take it one day at a time. Clean the stuff, put it away, rinse and dry your sink. They suggest starting with your kitchen sink, even if the rest of the kitchen is CPS-worthy. They have great ideas for getting started and staying on top of your tsunami of crap. Don't be put off by that stupid overweight fairy logo.
